From Chairside Burnout to a Practice Life Worth Living (Full Book)
This book is for every dentist who’s brilliant at the job and exhausted by the life around it — and is ready, finally, to change that.
The Shift came out of a season of my life where I was doing everything right on paper — and quietly disappearing inside it. I wrote this book because I couldn’t find the one I needed: something honest, human, and actually useful for dentists who are tired in a way that a holiday doesn’t fix. It walks through the full journey of burnout — what it really looks like, why our profession is so uniquely hard on the people inside it, and how to find your way back to a practice life that feels worth living. Each chapter includes grounded, real-world exercises — not theory, but things you can actually do — because reading about change and making it are two very different things.
I’m Dr. Georgios (Amrishan) Kallivretakis — a dentist, oral surgeon, coach, and recovering overachiever who grew up as a marble worker’s son in Greece and somehow ended up swimming in the Pacific Northwest every morning before clinic. I’ve lived the burnout this book describes, and I’ve found my way through it. I wrote this for every colleague who has ever sat in their car before walking into the surgery and wondered how much longer they can keep doing this. You’re not alone — and there is another way.
The Complete Burnout Toolkit: A Companion to The Shift
Every practical tool from the book — distilled into a single reference you can open between patients, carry on your phone, or work through at your own pace.
You do not need to have read the full book to use these tools.
The Shift Field Guide is the book’s practical companion — everything distilled into a single reference you can actually use on a clinical day. Where the book gives you understanding, the Field Guide gives you the tools consolidated: five honest self-assessments to locate where you are, ten nature-based practices that work even in a car park between patients, and clinical protocols designed to fit inside a ninety-second gap in your schedule.
